LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis)

LASIK has become increasingly popular since the 1990’s and has become a procedure of choice for people suffering from myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism. Advances in technology have made LASIK safer for patients and, in some cases, given patients better than 20/20 vision!

LASIK is a refractive procedure, which means that it is correcting the error that has developed within the eye for refracting or “bending” light as it passes through the cornea. This correction is done in four steps:

  1. The first stage begins with the instillation of a topical anesthetic which numbs the eye’s surface for the brief period of the procedure.

  2. Next, either a mechanical microkeratome or a laser keratome is utilized to create a thin “flap” in the outer surface of the cornea. A small area is left intact, like a hinge, and the flap is gently folded back to expose the tissue underneath (stroma).

  3. The excimer laser, which, based on the eye exams performed earlier, has been programmed with the exact coordinates that will correct the error, is precisely aimed onto the stroma to correct the irregularities and to modify the shape of the cornea, thus eliminating the refractive error.

  4. Lastly, the flap is repositioned into its original location. It immediately begins the healing process, and new, clear visual acuity commences.

Most people find their vision is improved immediately, but it is recommended that each patient go home and rest their eyes for at least a few hours. Most of our patients are amazed at how rapidly their new excellent vision occurs – transforming them into a new lens free life. Usually, by the next morning, you’re easily reading the alarm clock without the use of glasses and, in most cases, are quite capable of returning to work and other everyday life routines.
