Sjogren's Syndrome

Sjogren's syndrome affects four million people in the U.S. alone.  90% of these patients are women.  This is one of the many autoimmune diseases.  It primarily leads to a decrease in saliva and tears.  People often complain of dry eye, dry mouth, fatigue and joint pain.  Other less common symptoms include difficulty chewing, talking or swallowing, sore tongue, burning throat, skin dryness, digestive problems and a dry nose.

Contact Lenses: Infection Ready To Happen?

Contact Lens InfectionExtended wear contacts.....Ahhh the joy of wearing the same lenses without removing them to clean them for weeks on end.  What a great invention, right?  Wrong.  Extended wear contact lenses are the number one cause for sight- threatening infections.  In fact, one study showed that it is actually safer for you to have LASIK surgery (a one-time procedure) than constantly subjecting your eyes to a foreign body that harbors "bugs." 

As an ophthalmology resident, I used to be routinely called to see a patient (usually on a Friday afternoon at 5:00) with a terrible corneal ulcer from extended wear contacts.  This can be extremely serious, permanently decreasing vision from a resultant scar and sometimes even leads to the need for a corneal transplant.

Growths On the Surface of the Eye?

You undoubtedly have seen or perhaps have an apparent growth of tissue on the inner aspect of some eyes.  Sometimes these yellowish growths become red.  The fact is that these are benign degenerations that occur as a result of sun exposure.  Many people who work outdoors get them.  When these growths grow onto the cornea (the clear part of your eye) it is called a Pterygium (ter i gee um, the "p" is silent).  It can sometimes cause a change in vision if it grows too far onto the cornea.  It can become inflamed with wind, dust, or from dry eyes.
