LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis)

LASIK is a refractive procedure that is done in three stages.  The first stage begins with the instillation of a topical anesthetic after which either a mechanical microkeratome or a laser keratome is utilized to create a flap in the cornea.  A small area is left intact, like a hinge, then it is gently folded back to expose the tissue underneath (stroma).  Secondly, an excimer laser is precisely aimed onto the stroma to correct the irregularities and to modify the shape of the cornea.  Lastly, the flap is re-positioned into its original location.  It immediately begins the healing process, and new, clear visual acuity commences
