Niraj Desai, M.D.
Dr. Niraj Desai is an Ophthalmologist in Orange County specializing in Cataract surgery, LASIK and Corneal transplant surgery.
After completing his undergraduate studies in two years, Dr. Desai began his medical career at the Medical College of Georgia. In medical school, Dr. Desai was active in cutting edge research with renowned Ophthalmologist Dr. Balamurali Ambati. He had the opportunity to present his research at national conferences and publish several papers. In addition, Dr. Desai enjoyed volunteering and was selected to perform a surgical volunteership at the prestigious Christian Medical College in Vellore, India.
After graduating in the top ten percent of his class, Dr. Desai completed an Internal Medicine Internship at the University of Hawaii. Thereafter, Ophthalmology residency took him to the University of Texas at San Antonio. During residency, Dr. Desai conducted studies with the United States Air Force in the field of laser surgery, findings of which have been presented at national meetings. Dr. Desai was also recognized with the distinction of having performed the highest amount of surgery in his residency class.
His passion for Cornea and Refractive surgery brought him to southern California where he was chosen to complete a prestigious Fellowship in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of California, Irvine with world renowned surgeon Dr. Roger Steinert. He attained expertise in the surgery of complex cataract and anterior segment cases, corneal disease and refractive laser surgery. During fellowship he was very active in research relating to laser corneal transplants. He also engaged in teaching at the UC Irvine Medical Center throughout his fellowship. He served as a clinical instructor and surgeon at the Veteran’s Affairs hospital where he engaged in supervising resident clinic and surgery.
Since the completion of Fellowship, Dr. Desai has been committed to the delivery of outstanding eye care to his patients. His focus is cataract surgery, LASIK, corneal disease and surgery. He continues to participate in and perform research. Given his keen interest in teaching, Dr. Desai plans on volunteering his time to teach future generations of Ophthalmology residents at UC Irvine.
In addition to Ophthalmology, Dr. Desai enjoys spending time with his wife, playing sports, volunteering and traveling.
Dr. Desai is fluent in Hindi and Gujarati.
